In the Beginning

When you buy Kamab, you are buying Quality!

The Metzger family has been farming in Namibia since the late 1880’s. First they started their luck with tobacco and vegetable farming on a smallholding close to Okahandja. Repetitive droughts and a big flood, which took out all fields, convinced Grandfather Ernst Metzger to split with the Family business and move eastward into the Sandveld. They bought the farm Otjisonduvombu. Here they started ranching with cattle.

The passion for planting could not be resisted and so they also developed a large Orange orchard as well as a vineyard which at that time stood second to none. For many years they produced the well respected and known Oryx Brandy. My father, Dieter, son of Ernst and Ruth, grew up on that farm.

Later, in the early 1950’s the farm Otjisauna-Nord was bought and developed over three generations into what it is today. The area along the Black Nossob is particularly dry and very little underground water is available, which Grandfather Ernst did not know at the time. After drilling 62 dry boreholes, Grandfather Ernst decided to build two big earth dams to supply reliable water to the farm. These two big dams and many little dams (gat damme) are still today the farms lifeline. In 1963 Dieter and Ulla Metzger, Diethelms parents, started farming on Otjisauna-Nord. They farmed with commercial cattle, consisting of different breeds, but mainly Simmentaler and Brahman crosses. Later in the 1970’s they started developing a Red and White Brahman stud as well as a Trophy hunting business. The Stud cattle were always going to be a sideline while the commercial herd was to remain the main source of income.

Diethelm and Katja joined his parents in their farming activities after having finished their studies in 1986. The Metsibra Simbra Stud was registered in 1986.
